BVMS PhD DipECVN MRCVS RCVS and European Specialist in Veterinary Neurology

Kate graduated from Cambridge University in 2003 where she had already developed a keen interest in neurology by working on a project looking at laryngeal paralysis and polyneuropathies (Vet Record 2005). After graduation she moved to Aberdeen to work in general practice in order to develop her clinical and surgical skills and to enjoy the Grampian countryside. Co-incidentally, one of her clients here was Professor John Mallard who played a large part in developing magnetic resonance imaging.
Kate decided to return to Cambridge in 2005 to commence a three year residency programme in neurology under the supervision of Nick Jeffery. A variable case load allowed her to gain valuable experience in both small and large animal neurology including removing an abscess from the brain of an Alpaca Creer (JAVMA 2008). During this period she devoted time to a number of projects including syringomyelia and atlantoaxial subluxation in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (AJVR 2008) and comparison of treatment protocols for Granulomatous meningoencephalitis, for which she won a prize at the European Neurology Congress. In September 2008, Kate gained her European Diploma in Neurology. She is now working with Clare Rusbridge to offer a full-time neurology referral service at Stone Lion Veterinary Centre. She still has a keen interest in meningoencephalitis of unknown origin and Stone Lion is part of the multicenter study organized by Nicolas Granger to try and determine optimum treatment options.
